What is the IELTS General Training Test?
The IELTS General Training Test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English in everyday, social, and workplace situations. It focuses on practical language skills you are likely to use while living, working, or studying in an English-speaking environment.
The test is divided into four sections:

While Listening and Speaking are the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Exam, the Reading and Writing sections are specifically designed to test practical English skills for daily life and work environments.

Parts 1 and 2: Everyday Communication and Social Situations
- Part 1: Two people having a conversation (e.g., planning a trip)

Sections 3 & 4: Learning and Professional Training Situations
- Part 3: A group conversation (e.g., students and a teacher talking)
- Part 4: One person speaking about a study-related topic
Summary of Listening Module
- Duration: 30 minutes, plus an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers
- Total Questions: 40
- Marking: Each correct answer earns 1 point, which is then converted into a band score

IELTS General Training Reading
While Listening and Speaking are the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, the Reading and Writing sections are specifically designed to test practical English skills for daily life and work environments.
What does the Reading module of the exam typically consist of?
- The test is divided into three sections that gradually become more challenging.
- The combined length of all reading passages ranges between about 2,150 and 2,750 words.
Section-wise structure
- Section 1: Focuses on simple, everyday materials such as notices, advertisements, and schedules.
- Section 2: Contains texts related to professional settings, like job roles, agreements, and training documents.
- Section 3: Includes a single, longer passage on a general subject, typically taken from sources like newspapers, magazines, or books.
Reading Summary
- Duration: The test lasts 60 minutes, with no additional time provided for transferring answers.
- Number of questions: There are 40 questions in total.
- Assessment: Results are reported on a band scale ranging from 1 to 9.
Types of Reading questions
Question formats include: multiple-choice items, True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given statements, matching tasks (such as information or headings), sentence completion, summary completion, diagram labeling, and short-answer questions.
IELTS General Training Writing
In IELTS Writing module, IELTS General Training exam measures how well you can communicate in written English for practical, real-life contexts, including both personal and professional situations. It focuses on your ability to express ideas clearly, use appropriate tone and structure, and respond effectively to common everyday tasks.
The test consists of two required writing tasks that all candidates must complete.
Task 1 – Letter Composition
• At least 150 words required
• Suggested time: 20 minutes
• Write a letter in an appropriate style (informal, semi-formal, or formal)
• Typical situations may involve housing matters, work-related communication, or community issues
Task 2 – Essay Composition
• Minimum length: 250 words
• Suggested time: 40 minutes
• Produce an essay discussing a general topic
• Possible themes include society, environmental concerns, health, or education
Writing Assessment Criteria
• Fulfilment of the task requirements
• Logical organization and smooth flow of ideas
• Variety and appropriateness of vocabulary
• Accuracy and range of grammatical structures
Note: The second task is worth twice as many marks as the first task.
IELTS General Training Speaking
In IELTS Speaking module, IELTS General Training exam is conducted as an in-person interview with a trained examiner, and the session is recorded to ensure consistency and maintain quality standards.

• Part 1: Opening section with personal questions and general conversation
• Part 2: Individual speaking task on an assigned topic
• Part 3: Extended discussion involving deeper questions and opinions

How to book IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR)?
When you log into your profile page on IELTS IDP India website, you will see your IELTS results. If you would like to improve one result, simply click on the ‘Retake’ button for that skill of the test to book. Please be aware, you can only book one skill retake once per full IELTS test.
Who accepts IELTS One Skill Retake?
The IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted in several countries:
Australia
IELTS One Skill Reatke is accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency, and more than 50 Australian universities and institutions already. Over 12,000 organisations around the world accept IELTS. You will need to check with these organisations to see if they also accept IELTS One Skill Retake results.
Please ensure to check with the organisation you intend to apply to for more information about eligibility requirements. Here is the list of One Skill Retake accepting Australian institutions. An increasing number of Australian universities and institutions are accepting One Skill Reatke results each month.
New Zealand
Immigration New Zealand has approved the IELTS One Skill Retake as an accepted English language test for people looking to study, work, or migrate to New Zealand.
The UK
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has approved IELTS One Skill Retake for use as part of the Secure English Language Test (SELT) requirements for those wishing to live, work and study in the UK.
These approvals make it easier for you to meet the specific requirements of your desired institutions or immigration programs by improving your scores in one specific skill area without the need to retake the entire test.
Canada
Currently, the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) option is not accepted by Canadian immigration authorities for permanent residence, study visas, or work permits. For immigration purposes through IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), applicants are required to submit results from a full IELTS test taken in a single sitting. While some Canadian universities or colleges may consider the One Skill Retake on a case-by-case basis, it is not recognized for Express Entry, Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), or other official immigration programs. Individuals planning to migrate, study, or work in Canada are advised to take the complete IELTS exam to ensure their scores are valid for all immigration and official purposes.

What is IELTS One Skill Retake?
The IELTS One Skill Retake offers a flexible way to demonstrate your full English proficiency. This option allows you to retake just one section of the test—Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking—if you want to improve a specific skill, without having to retake all four sections.
Who is eligible to take IELTS One Skill Retake?
You can book the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) after completing a full IELTS test on a computer and receiving your results from a qualified test centre. The retake must be scheduled within 60 days of your original test date.
Can I complete a One Skill Retake multiple times?
Please note that only one retake is allowed per full IELTS test. You cannot retake multiple sections from the same test.
Can I book two (2) One Skill Retakes for the same test?
A maximum of one section can be retaken for each full IELTS test. Multiple sections cannot be retaken from the same test.
When will I receive my results?
Results for the IELTS on Computer test are typically available within 2 days of completing the exam.
